Painting portraits - capturing the subject's essence

Main Logo copy

I have always had a passion for art, from pencil sketches and pen and wash through to acrylics and oils. I love the challenge of animal portraiture, the skill being to capture the essence of the subject rather than just a likeness. It's the glint in the eye and the signature expression combined with the sense of being alive that makes a great portrait, whether it's human or animal.

I have had dogs forever but came late to horses, not starting to ride until I was 40. They do say that converts are the most devout and my obsession with all things equestrian has taken over much of my spare time.

Painting cat portraits has been important to man since ancient times and I can see why - they are mysterious characters who make wonderful subjects!

Born in West Yorkshire, at various times in my career I have managed high street superstores, World Heritage Sites, national museums and charities, been an interim manager, run my own management consultancy and now I am working as an internal consultant for a major national charity.
